Saltwater sport fishing, on the other hand, is much riskier. It requires a ship, a bigger gold investment, and the possibility of PvP encounters and environmental challenges.
For beginners, it’s best to start with freshwater sport fishing first.
What You Need to Start Freshwater Sport Fishing
To start freshwater sport fishing, you’ll need a rowboat, a freshwater chum, lures, and a fishing rod.
How to craft a Rowboat:
A rowboat is required for freshwater sport fishing, as fishing from the shore does not work.

Once crafted, it goes directly into your inventory. Add it to your hotbar so you can deploy it at any lake or river.
How to craft Freshwater Chum

- Navigate to Food → Freshwater Chum.
You’ll need 50 unprocessed fish, which you can gather through regular AFK fishing, so spend some time collecting fish first.
Buy Lures from the Spot Fishing Vendor
Head to a harbor and talk to the Spot Fishing Vendor. Buy a lure; cheaper lures will catch smaller fish, while more expensive ones can help you catch bigger, more valuable fish. Once a fish is caught, the lure is consumed, so you’ll need a new one for the next catch.

To find a freshwater sport fishing spot, head to lakes or rivers and watch for visual cues such as seagulls flying in circles or fish visible near the water’s surface. These signs indicate a valid sport fishing location.
How to Activate the Fishing Spot
Before you start, make sure you have your lure in your inventory and your freshwater chum (green). Use the chum, and your character will throw fish into the water.
When you see bubbles and movement on the surface, the spot fishing is active. The fishing spot remains active for one hour, and anyone nearby can fish there during that time.
How to Start Sport Fishing
Open your hotbar and select Sport Fishing. If the skill isn’t visible, press K to open your Skill Book, navigate to the Fishing tab, and add Sport Fishing to your hotbar. Once added, you can cast your line anywhere within the active fishing zone—the game won’t let you cast outside of it.
How to Catch the Fish
After activating the spot, wait for a fish to bite, which can take up to two minutes. Icons will appear above the fish, and you’ll need to match them using the mini-game hotbar near your health bar until the fish is fully exhausted.
